The principle of altruism plays an integral part in most cultural traditions. Altruistic impulses and actions are a natural result of correct spiritual development.

Chinese Buddhism:
In Chinese Buddhism, the bodhisattva is the embodiment of altruism. The Bodhisattva is an enlightened being who remains in the cycle of death and rebirth–rather than choosing liberation–in order to help all beings on earth achieve enlightenment.

Jainism
Tirthankaras play a similar role in the Jain tradition. They are considered realized humans who have “have succeeded in crossing over life’s stream of rebirths and have made a path for others to follow. “ https://www.britannica.com

Hinduism
The Hindus have their avatars, or god-like beings, who take a physical incarnation on earth during each cycle of humanity, to uplift and guide mankind. As well, Hindus have their rishis (sages) and demi-gods who have special duties managing every element and aspect of human life.

Christians
The Christians, as many people know, have their saints and angels, continually blessing and guiding humanity.

Javanese Hindu Tradition
In the spiritual tradition of Java, Indonesia, there is a very special god named Ishmaya— or Semar in his human form. Semar embodies the exact principle of altruism. The shape of this god is round and fat, like a sphere or an egg. Semar’s round shape represents the causal plane. The Javanese mystics understanding is that to achieve a truly altruistic state, a person should be established in the higher causal plane. This higher plane is approachable through the energy center at the top of the forehead, at the hairline. This point is its own chakra, also known as the tuft of Semar. You can see from the picture that the shadow puppet representation of Semar has a tuft of hair at this chakra.

The extraordinary expectation of the Javanese mystical tradition is that an aspirant shall not only pray to gods, but become one in consciousness with them, through meditation and other means.
